Camping Hints & Tips

Frequently Asked Questions.

Tent Guide

The Kampa Watergate 8 is a 8-berth tunnel tent with a vis-à-vis bedroom arrangement (i.e. the bedrooms face each other) across a large central living area. The vis-a-vis are particularly popular for those who want a bit of separation (not to say privacy) from their camping companions, family members, mother-in-law, etc.

The tent features a fully sewn-in groundsheet throughout so preventing drafts, bugs and an exceptionally high water table entering the tent. Kampa has not skimped on the size of the windows in the living area which help make the interior feel light and airy. There’s also plenty of headroom at 200cm in height.

Access in and out of the tent comes from the two large side doors, one of which has a protective rain canopy overhead to protect the doorway in inclement weather. In addition, both have secondary mesh doors to keep any flying bugs at bay on hot days when you still want plenty of ventilation.

To help accommodate 8 people there's a 4-berth inner which has a divider curtain to form a 2+2 arrangement. At the other end of the tent there's a separate 4 Berth inner. As the tent has a fully sewn-in groundsheet this inner can be removed if desired, to create more living space. The inners also have a useful organiser pockets in the front wall –handy for all your bits and bobs.

Key features of the Kampa Watergate 8 Tent include:

  • Weathershield polyester flysheet.
  • 5000mm hydrostatic head.
  • Sewn-in PE groundsheet (10,000mm HH).
  • Large end vents that close.
  • Three large windows.
  • Interior privacy covers.
  • Two side entrance doors.
  • Mesh double doors.
  • Inner tent organiser pockets.
  • Canopy porch poles included.
  • Lamp hanging point.
  • Cable tidy system.
  • Zipped cable entry point.

Comments by Dervla - Sales Staff

The Kampa Watergate 8 is a very popular tent. It's design is similar to the Royal Brisbane. This tent is easy to put up and take down. The Watergate has a very high HH rate resistance of 5000mm. The bedrooms are 2+2 at one end and 2+2 at the other end. There are 2 entrance doors into this tent. The living space is 2.7m x 3.1m. The height is 200cm a little smaller then the Royal Brisbane model but because it is lower it would be less wind prone. This tent if you wish can take an extension which can also be purchased if you wish to increase the size of your living area.

Packs down into 1 bag. One person could erect this tent if they are used to camping. The poles are made of fibreglass.

EXTENSION: Many people buy this tent but I would have to say about 75% come back to buy the extension at some stage. You won't always use your Extension but it gives you so much more room. I have seen the extension on camp sites been used as kitchen areas set up with a cooker stand, fridge etc. The extension is also perfect for leaving the buckets shovels, bikes and buggies in out of the rain.

CARPETS: For me this is a must. I know the Carpet can get dirty and you can't wash them in a washing machine. If your walking around or sitting on the floor of your tent with your kids it makes such a difference. It's soft and warm and comfortable. (Bit of luxury!).

FOOTPRINTS: Optional in my view they can be good and bad. If you go camping and the site ground is wet and mucky when you get there the footprint is great because you can open your tent up on a nice clean footprint instead of getting your new tent dirty. Once you do not have a "wash out" of a week when you take your tent down it's still clean and it's only your footprint which requires to be cleaned.

If however you have a "wash out" or if your tent is pitched on a slope the rain water can find its way between your footprint and the groundsheet of your tent. If the water lodges and remains there it can then start to come up through your groundsheet. This has happened to me where I had my cooker stand stacked with heavy items. The water started to come up through the groundsheet at the points where the stand legs were.

Only when taking our tent down did we see a puddle of water on our footprint underneath with the cooker stand was placed. A footprint is also a double layer so if there was a protruding rock or broken glass etc your footprint would protect your groundsheet a little.

I would give this tent a rating of 9/10.

Perfect for:
  • Families of 8 People.
  • Can put up on your own.
  • Can fit in a small car.
  • Scout Groups ideal.
  • Want a tent which can be added to like with the use of an extension.
