Note: All dome tents should be erected at home before going Camping. Read our practical hints at the top of this page (there is a separate link)  (  Practical Hints link) before going and please do practice. An instruction section covering most styles of dome tent is posted on our homepage.  Your help in improving our web information would be appreciated. Many large dome tents come with instructions telling you that they can be erected in "minutes" Ignore that information! Practice first. They can't be erected in minutes!

Poles: From any O Meara tent will be replaced free of charge for the first year irrespective as to how they have been broken! Just bring in the poles and your receipt.

Hydrostatic Head: In theory the amount (height) of water material will withstand before leaking. If you want to test what the "spec" says get a test tube and fill it to the height specified. Next hold that height of water in the test tube on the material. Leave for a few minutes and see what the result is. In O'Meara's opinion this measurement is a load of nonsense. The problem of leaking is almost always mistaken and is a problem of condensation. Rain in Ireland still does not fall in column inches. It certainly does not fall in test tubes at least not yet. Check instead for ventilation features. I have asked in a factory in China about the hydrostatic head to be told I would be given a certificate for what ever number of mm I wanted!  It has recently been brought to my attention that the ground sheet fitted / supplied with some of our tents is not waterproof. As an explanation let me advise anyone reading this that the ground sheet is made of waterproof material, however, if you camp during bad weather and the ground under the ground sheet fills with water, water will find a way onto your ground sheet.  

Hydrostatic Head Note no 2. The surface tension of any material is compromised once it is touched or rubbed. Water follows the easiest path of resistance and will normally run off a water resistant material. Once the surface tension is broken this law of physics changes. If you want to see some modern dome tents perform in the wind look at the bottom of my Frame tent page. Once the fly sheet has touched the inner tent the surface tension has been compromised. Even in a cotton tent the same law of physics applies. Once the tents have dried however the surface tension will be restored and the material will repel water once again.

Budget Priced Domes: I considered the following before typing as the feed back of directness on our web site has heartened me and emboldened me to be brutally honest. All large dome tents for families that are "Budget Priced are just what they seem Budget priced. Some of the prices are so cheap as to beggar belief. The quality of the tents for the price is fantastic but they are not made to, nor are they intended to last. Many of the budget priced tents will only last one or two outings. Seams although taped will start to come undone. The seams can be seam sealed to repair them but not with standing the repair the tents have a function which is to get you camping in the first place. As most suppliers now source in the Far east it is only the local suppliers quality that determines the better tents. Budget tents will get you started and in most cases are even better than we say.  Apologies for the rant but it is intended to be useful and guide you perhaps to pay a little more than the cheapest price for your tent.

"O Meara's are even more convinced than ever that for Irish weather (2007,2008, 2009) there are (with a few small exceptions) no substitute for a cotton tent". Please ask our advice only if you want the truth!
