	More Information: Electric supply to tents is becoming more common and almost all camping sites on the Continent will offer it to you.. Common sense tells us that electricity is dangerous. Cables and appliances that are used at home may not be suitable for use camping. Dedicated units for camping should comply with British Standard Bsen60309-2. Ideally the lead should be about 25 metres long to easily reach the power source. Leads should be uncoiled while in use to prevent heat building up. The unit in the tent should attach to a tent pole or be be placed off the ground and have a Residual Current Device (RCD) and mini circuit breakers (MCB). The RCD is critical as it is a very fast acting safety device that cuts off the electricity if there is imbalance in the electricity flow........this can happen when it flows through you!!. The MCB prevents overload and it will trip if the load is too high just like a fuse. Please also remember that the supply in the camping site will be limited and is designed to restrict the amount of appliances used at the same time. Normally the mains supply at the site delivers either 10 amps or 16 amps. 10 amps = 2300 watts 16 amps = 3680 watts As appliances are marked with their power consumption a little maths will tell you what you can use. For example a domestic kettle uses 2kw = 2000 watts = 8.3 amps. A low wattage kettle uses a as little as 750 watts and a camping fan heater usually comes with heat settings down to as low as 500 watts. Remember that water and electricity do not mix and care is needed at all times. So watch out for leaks and especially condensation a bug bearer in modern dome tents. A really good reason for not using domestic appliances in a tent is that they are not resistant to dampness.  Use only the correct hook up equipment that is fit for purpose and has the appropriate safety devices. Test the circuit breaker and use a mains tester before use. Stop using electrical appliances if the inside of the tent is getting wet. Remember that trailing wires can be a tripping hazard. Keep your hook up equipment off the ground. Do not use domestic cables plugs or appliances. Keep children away from your electricity supply.
